The old idea of insurance was to spread costs by having the relatively healthy subsidize the sick. But many insurers and pharmacy benefit managers are challenging that ideal: Instead of paying a modest $10 to $30 co-payment, as is usually the case for cheaper drugs, patients who need especially costly medicines are being forced to pay 20 percent to 33 percent of the bill (up to an annual maximum) for drugs that can cost tens of thousands of dollars, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, a

The radical life of Martin Luther King Jnr

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 15:27:39 PDT
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was killed on April 4, 1968 while supporting striking Memphis sanitation workers. Unfortunately, the official commemorations of King often provide us with a sanitized version of his life and legacy and the history of the civil rights movement. By Will Soto, CWI United States It is now routine to hear right-wing politicians quote King to justify attacks on affirmative action or welfare, or to see his

Calling All Women

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 15:36:03 PDT
Teri’s latest post on BHB sparked a thought for me. She mentioned that BHB was not really a friendly place for women, but she plays with the boys anyway. After a few moments of introspection, I realized just about every Blogger I know was male and despite my best efforts, I had failed to get the gals in my office very interested in Blogging (reading or writing). Heck, I can’t even get my wi

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 16:13:48 PDT
Interest in the presidential election should be driving up ratings for the Big Three networks' evening news shows, right? Wrong. The Tigers have fit in three days’ worth of games while I fit in two days worth of work and some naps. In all three of the games, the Tigers were able to get baseruners. In the first game, they eventually took advantage of that fact. The next two, not-so-much. Tigers pitching has been mixed. Kenny Rogers did barely enough to get the win Friday, but his b

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 14:49:51 PDT

Builder Bankruptcies Bringing Out Some Anxiety?

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 15:38:36 PDT
An interesting story came up on National Public Radio (NPR) the other day about the growing lack of confidence consumers are having with homebuilders due to the increasing number of bankruptcies and dire financial news. While this is an alarming trend, especially with larger, higher-profile builders, it’s also an important lesson to be aware of.

Light box

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 22:32:56 PDT
I finally made that light box I said I was going to make. I found the directions here. I am going to use it for Ribbon Jar, but sampled today with some of those scrapbooking layouts that I've been whipping out. I still need to figure out everything. Basically what I am doing now is using the speedlight and flashing the top of the box and letting the light bounce. So I do get some glare. Plus I don't know if it's because I zoom in or what, but the layouts turn out a little bit warped. I

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 22:45:21 PDT
I have been reading the book: The Writing on the Wall. Mr. Will Hutton is the author. The book is billed as a look at what makes China tick and what the west should do about it. I chose it on the strength of the reviews as I wanted to learn more about China in regard to our discussions concerning globalization. I also wanted to hear a voice not from the US. Mr. Hutton is very established in the economic world in England. Maybe he is their Mr. Krugman? You can read a summary regarding the subj
